- Arizona was starting their third quarterback of the season in Blaine Gabbert, and he looked quite sharp through most of the game despite having limited time with the playbook. They struggled to run the ball, but were able to stay competitive through the first three quarters.
- A key coaching moment came with 6:36 left in the game. Arizona was down 24-21 and elected to go for it on 4th & 1 from their 35-yard line. Their defense had been playing well so they were likely going to get another possession. When they failed to convert on 4th down, it created a huge momentum swing and gave Houston the ball in opponent territory. On the next play from scrimmage Houston gashed Arizona on a run play and took it in 35 yards for the score. This 4th down decision resulted in a rapid seven point swing that effectively put the game out of reach, and could have been avoided by punting the ball.
