Key Coaching Decisions #1: (ATL ball, trailing 28-10 / Fourth and goal, CLE 1 / 11:43 Q1)
• Atlanta attempts a pass play out of the shotgun that results in the ball sailing out of the end zone. It was arguably too early to forgo kicking the field goal, but the specific play call decision to pass out of the shotgun is what really drew the downgrade in this situation. Passing out of the shotgun appeared a poor decision when that close to the end zone.
Key Coaching Decision #2: (ATL ball, trailing 28-10 / Third and 4, CLE 10 / 5:09 Q4)
• Atlanta missed an opportunity to challenge the spot of the ball on a pass completion that, if challenged, would have resulted in a touchdown for Atlanta. This should have been identified and challenged by the coaching staff. They would go on to score a touchdown but not before burning an additional minute of game clock at a time when they needed to preserve game clock in order to mount a comeback.
• Cleveland looked extremely well prepared for this matchup, and certainly found something to exploit in Atlanta’s run defense, evidenced by 200+ rush yards on the day. Credit to Cleveland’s play calling and game planning.
