We watch a lot of football here–closely–and our review of 2019 has us convinced that Bruce Arians’ Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to be strong 2020 contenders.
The 2019 Buccaneers weren’t far off. They simply were a turnover machine, but even with those troubles, they were a hard out in almost every game. What we like best about the Bucs under Arians is that they play very hard. In our view, that’s the very first job of any head coach–get your players to play hard.
All the fancy X’s and O’s are irrelevant if that doesn’t happen. Arians makes it happen.
We also like defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. His defense is coming–GM Jason Licht just needs to get Bowles some help on the back end.
The Bucs also have a lot of young veterans coming into their prime. Shaq Barrett, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Ronald Jones, Ryan Jensen, Ali Marpet, William Gholston, Cameron Brate. All of these players are forming a good nucleus that isn’t far away.
The biggest question will be the quarterback position. Will Jameis Winston be back?
We don’t know, but we know Arians and Licht will be aggressive. We don’t see the Bucs drafting a rookie and playing him, however. Arians is 67, and knows his horizon is short.
There are a number of free agent veteran QBs available, and it wouldn’t surprise us to see the Bucs leverage Winston.
The Buccaneers will contend. Las Vegas may have their over/under win total, we’re guessing, at 7.5 .
We’d take that over–emphatically.
